Peace Corps

Posted By on June 13, 2006

Some of you know that I’ve wanted to go to Peace Corps since my sophomore year of college. But marriage and school and life conspired and I decided that I’d go after kids and retirement.

What with selling the house and getting money from it and thinking about traveling–I’m applying to the Peace Corps. All I have left is the essays and my resume. Unfortunately, I don’t have any copies of my old resumes. Curse keeping everything as 1s and 0s. Especially since there are two old supervisors that I don’t remember the names of.  I might have a printed copy somewhere–that’s my next task for today.

So, wish me luck.

Best of luck! Go thou forth and be thou all peace-y and stuff! Carry thy divine rockingness into the places which rocketh not!

Good luck, baby.

If you can make pink look good, then you can do anything.

I am glad to hear that you are excited about this potentiality. I know that you put a lot of thought into decisions like this, so I’m hopeful you’ll have quick answers to these questions:

1. Is this in addition to or instead of the other travelling you’ve already mentioned?
2. When would you be departing? (Approximately: as in, Fall, late 2007, tomorrow?)
3. How long would you be signed up and/or actively “away” in the Peace Corps?
4. Do you have any control over where you would be sent? Do they ask you where you want to go and what you want to do, or do they just “send” you?
5. If you were accepted, would you then forego the purchasing of a condo that you have been talking about?
6. When do you expect the sale of your condo to go through? Is it dependent on the outcome of this application to the Peace Corps? Do you have the timing for all of this worked out yet, or are you waiting to see how it all plays out?

I love you Pearl

1. This is in addition to the Ireland trip.
2. I listed my availability as being after the middle of October. The time at wherever I’m assigned is 24 months and I believe it’s a 3 month training period, but I don’t recall that off the top of my head.
3. I don’t have any control, although I asked for Latin America as my first choice and Africa as my second choice. I’m debating putting in for North Africa as my third choice.
4. I’m not going to buy unless I get turned down.
5&6. I haven’t made any offers.

I’m also applying to Doctors without Borders, but I don’t think they’ll accept me–maybe after I’m done with Peace Corps they will. That would be anywhere from 6 months to 2 years.
