At some point on the trip, Shannon and I started talking about the games you could play with the truckers—making up secret handshakes that the truckers use to look for certain types of people, and that kind of stuff. After driving all day, everything gets really REALLY funny.

Kitschy sign Luckily for us, Charlie (of Charlie and Bridget of Sedona fame—and by fame, I mean they’re friends of Lizi) is fascinated by the architect Mary Colter. There’s a bunch of her stuff in the Grand Canyon, including the tower at Desert View. Because of we had been made aware of Mary Colter’s work, we stopped in Winslow, Arizona to see what she thought of as her masterpiece, La Posada.

It was very beautiful, although I don’t know if I find it more masterpieceful than the Desert View tower, but the best part was the white erase board with a notice advertising the owner’s run for state senate or some such scribbled on it. That’s what you call a real class act.
