Quickie

Mrs. Jeremiah came to our offices a couple of days ago to measure me for national wear. I had brought fabric that I didn’t have plans for as well, and we talked for a few minutes about what we could maybe do with it. Eventually I said I wanted a dress, but I wanted it short.

She was doing the measurements and stopped the tape mid-calf, “Here for the dress?”

“No,” I said, smiling, seeing what was coming, “I want it short. Just above the knee.”

She looked at me a little incredulously.

“Don’t worry,” I told her. I’m not going to wear it in Malawi.”

“Here,” I repeated, gesturing just above my knee.

She shook her head sadly and then measured to just below my knee. “Here?”

I gave up. “Yes, there is good. Thank you.”
