Last Saturday

DeboraHonester and I hosted a little party on my porch. My mama sent a bunch of bubble stuff a while ago, and between getting ready for holidays and exhaustion and all the traveling for Peace Corps stuff I’ve been doing since I got back from America, I never had time to pull out the bubble stuff. I wanted to earlier in the week, but it’s getting dark right around when I get home now, and bubbles require some kind of light more stable than potential escom service.
Honester and IaniSo, Saturday I did my laundry and (finally) unpacked my bags from home and Close of Service conference while Honi went to the market to pick up more maize to take to the mill and grind into ngaiwa. When she got back I had just finished mixing the water, dish soap, corn starch, and baking soda just like book said*. I pulled out the bubble blowers and the big pvc pipe with netting we were hoping would give us 10 foot long bubbles.
It didn’t. Possibly because of the brand name dish soap I scoffed in the face of**. Anyway, we invited D’Lynn and the kids that called me Sika and not Azungu. Some of them weren’t around, so that ended up being mostly Tamandani, Debora, and Iani. Alinafe would have been included as well except that she’s still terrified of me. Although the last time I said “bo bo” to her, she did manage a thumbs up and a sniffling “bo” I could just hear through Linly’s shoulder.Honi and Tama
DeboraThe kids couldn’t decide which was more fun: blowing the bubbles or trying to catch and pop them. We all had fun trying to get big bubbles out of the big bubble thing—although Tama had more fun getting it tangled while swishing it around in the basin.
The book with the recipe recommends having some ground with traction available. My choices were slippy mud or slippy porch, and so by the end of the bubble blowing we were all skidding around everywhere. That was fun, too, since no one fell and broke their head open.

*Except that I scoff in the face of the brand name detergents the recipe recommended.
**By scoffed in the face of, I mean I couldn’t buy dish detergent that is not actually sold in Malawi.
