The Elections

CampaigningThe elections are happening next Tuesday. I tried to get pictures of a group of women in UDF zitenje, but they wanted money I didn’t want to give them. I thought it would be nice for them, considering 95% of all TV media coverage, and most of the radio coverage is positively skewed to the current President’s party, the Democratic Progressive Party*. But I can see how they would assume I’d get money for the picture and they wanted a piece of the pie. My Chichewa isn’t good enough to explain the concept of Creative Commons to them. There are flags and signs everywhere. All over Zomba. I think the DPP food security logo looks like someone passed out when it’s flying sideways on flags posted to trees. Most people think I’m crazy and then cock their heads a bit and say, “Well, I can see why you think it looks like a passed out guy.” It’s ears of maize, by the way. But I still crack up everytime I see one of the flags. Which is often.

I’ve heard rumors that DPP people who go around pulling UDF flags down don’t get prosecuted, whereas UDF people who do the same are sent to jail. I don’t know if that’s true, but I do know that until very recently all the flags in Zomba were DPP. Now they’re just mostly DPP. Of course, Zomba is a DPP stronghold.

Scona asked me if people went around pulling election signs during our elections. I told him yes, and there are rules about what signs can be where. But I couldn’t remember what the rules were. Oh well.

*which until about 2 weeks ago I thought was the Democratic Peoples Party.
