Updates to what Lonely Planet says:traveling Malawi to Ilha

Posted By on August 20, 2009

This is only of interest if you’re doing the traveling.

  • There are NO flights from Cuamba to Nampula or vice versa. There havenºt been for years.
  • The train runs both ways every day except Monday. BUT, there´s only one second class car, and that runs to Nampula W,F,Su and to Cuamba Tu,Th,Sa.
  • You canºt get a visa at the Nayuchi/Entre Lagos border. You can cross just into Entre Lagos for a quick looksee without a visa, but you can’t travel on unless you want to do it illegally.
  • You can get a visa at the Chiponde/Mandimba border. They looked at me funny, but my only problem was waiting for the boss-guy to arrive.
  • Pensiao sao Miguel in Cuamba has really nice and helpful staff (when you can find them), but they charge too much for their rooms.
  • The bus depot for transport to Ilha de Moçambique in Nampula is about 2 or 3 blocks to the right if facing the train station. The map in the book makes it look like it’s across the street.
  • Residencial Karruthaka is a little worn at the edges and not so new and only moderately clean (the sheets are clean, the floors are clean, the tub was the only part that wasnºt clean) but that is pretty much outweighed by the fact that there are hot showers. Although I get the feeling the hot water may be intermittent.
