31 August 2009: Travel to Maputo

Posted By on May 28, 2010

By the time I got to Maputo, my asthma was all cleared up, and besides a bit of a stuffy nose, I was feeling all better. I immediately treated myself to incredibly nummy (if pricey) Thai food. Well, after getting a hotel room (Mt1250, WTF, mate?). In the hotel room, I noticed that I looked awfully tan . . .so I washed my face. That fixed that.

Leaving Inhambane, Cynthia told me the bus (Mt350) would come by to pick me at 5am. It arrived at 0520, and took me and the other passenger to the depot where we filled until 0545. There were still only about 7 of us on the bus, and it didn’t finish loading until after we had been on the road for an hour and a half. This is greatly preferable to the minibus guys in Nselema who waited for their minibus to fill until their custom started to rebel and threatened to leave.

That hour and a half:mmm, nice and comfy. Other than the gradual, inevitable filling of the bus, and a Chinese road project near Xai-Xai (possibly my favorite place name in Mozambique), which made what should have been a 7 hour journey 8 and a half instead, it was uneventful even with the ubiquitous Westlife (I refuse to link to any of my previous Westlife posts this time—they’re too ubiquitous).
